Sculpted Jar Lids

Here’s the baker’s clay recipe:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup salt

1 cup water

Mix all together in a large bowl; add a little more flour or water as needed to form a workable, smooth dough. Knead in the bowl for 5-10 minutes to remove any excess air. (If you’re working this dough all by yourself, don’t be tempted to make lots more - it dries out too quickly, and you can always make some more later.)

Now for the jar lid instructions:

Start by "padding" the outside of your clean metal jar lid with a cap of dough (be sure to cover the sides too - just down to the lip of the lid.) Decorate this base with whatever creativity you like... Use little objects to imprint designs in it, and/or add little dough shapes or cutouts to it. For instance, add leaves (indent the veins) and then fruit or flower shapes atop them. You can air-dry the lids for 2-3 days, or bake them on a cookie sheet at 300 degrees until the dough very lightly browns. (If they crack, patch with a little moist dough.) If you like, paint the finished product or give them a protective coating of clear acrylic spray.
