Use stale bread of any type... Spread the slices with a
thin layer of soft butter on one side. To season, mix garlic
and/or crushed dried herbs into the butter first. Cut the
slices into cubes, rectangles, or small rounds (depends on
what shape bread you started out with!). Some people like to
remove the crusts - not me! Spread the bits in a single
layer on a baking sheet. Bake at 325 degrees for 15-20
minutes until golden, stirring every few minutes and
watching it carefully to make sure it doesn’t burn. (If
you like them really dry, melba toast them for 4-6
hours at about 125 degrees. If you want them to be lower in
fat, just spray the cubes with oil instead of buttering the
bread slices.) Store in airtight containers.
