Use stand-alone plain paper shopping bags (as in the proverbial brown paper bag - or white)... large enough to have the top third free after placing your gift inside. Fold the top third down and crease it; then fold the two corners in to leave a triangle... this becomes the snout of the critter! Add a nose at the point of the triangle and some eyes (buttons, maybe?). Then add some ears and/or antlers, perhaps made out of heavier paper or cardboard... et voilà! - critter.
