Bird feeders don't have to be "au naturel" -
this is how to make a bird feeder from a couple of bowls, that little birds can
shelter in while big birds can’t get at it...
You’ll need to "destroy" two hard plastic
bowls, one about 6-8" across (any color) and one about
10-12" across (clear). The small bowl holds the seed
(and, on the rim, the birds) - the larger one hangs over the
top of, and a bit outside of, the smaller one... as a roof.
Join the two bowls with a threaded rod about 12-14"
tall (it depends on the depths of the bowls - you want the
rim of the large one to hang only about 1-2" above the
rim of the small one, as well as 2-3" away from it all
around... i.e., leaving enough room so a little bird can fly
up into the space). Place nuts and washers on either side of
each bowl where the rod passes through a hole just big
enough for it; on the top, use a nut with a loop attached -
from which it can be hung.
