Buy fairly tall, solid-colored pillar candles (i.e.,
about 3-4" in diameter). Glue a strip of beautiful
wallpaper border (not too wide) around the center of
the cylinder, so that some of the wax shows at top and
bottom. Melt clear paraffin in a tall, narrow can (a little
bigger in diameter and height than the candles) set in
boiling water in a larger saucepot. Clip a hemostat or small
vise grip to the wick of the candle and dip it into the can
so that the paraffin comes all the way up to the top edge of
the candle. (You’ll have to experiment a bit with getting
the right amount of paraffin in the can - it depends on the
size of the can and candle, of course!) Drain the dipped
candle over the can and set it onto waxed paper to firm
up.
Dip as many times as you like to get the look that suits
you - the more you dip, the "mistier" the
wallpaper design becomes. When the new wax layer is
completely cooled and hardened, polish with wadded-up nylon
stockings or a commercial candle glosser.
