This teacup bird feeder
is a delightful decoration for a garden or simply for a
window box or larger plant pot... and what a wonderful gift
it is! Plus it's easy to make...
Look for cheap teacups and saucers at dollar stores or
yard sales. (People try to sell older ones for lots of
money, but pretty new, and inexpensive, china is being made
all the time...) Gosh, do they even really have to match?
- the only real need is for the cup to nestle into the
saucer securely.
Buy a length of sturdy 1" copper tubing or PVC pipe
- the length being at your discretion... What you're
going to do is stick the teacup on top of the tubing - so
how far do you want it to stick up above soil line?
Depending on whether or not you have the tubing jam into the
ground or onto the ground around a piece of rebar
stuck into the ground, you'll add another few-several inches
(or not) to the length. You'll also need to buy a
same-diameter (and same-material) cap to fit onto the
tubing.
Here's all you do: Cement the flat part of the
tubing cap to the underside of the saucer (using something
like Duco Cement, Gorilla Glue, or silicone sealant).
Cement the teacup onto the saucer. When the cement has
thoroughly cured (I'd wait a day), just push the cap onto
the tube - and it's a teacup bird feeder!
(If you're going to expect the giftee to push the tubing
itself into the ground, better cut it off at an angle at the
bottom. ...Or provide a foot or more of rebar to go with the
rest.)
