Unique Christmas presents (etc.) might be right out your own
door...
If your "giftee" doesn’t live where you live, you
might like to share something of where you live with him...
whether he’s been there or not. If he has, it will remind him
of the (good) time he spent there, probably with you. If not, it
will draw him closer to you by intriguing him with something
about your environment.
Perhaps there are regional food gifts that might come to
mind... or acclaimed foods that are manufactured locally. There
may be other things that your area is famous for, such as
beautiful scenery (photographs?), a local ethnic population that
makes interesting crafts (e.g., batiked Ukrainian Easter eggs?),
or growing roses (gift certificate from a local nursery that
ships nation-wide?), or even fun tourist traps (tacky
souvenirs?).
Or you might come up with something more evocative that’s
representative of where you live...
Lovely abalone shells if you live near the beach - or how
about a recording of the sounds of the sea? Pine needle baskets
if you live in the forest - or perhaps pinenut brittle?
Hand-tied fishing flies for a piscatorial friend, if you live
near mountain streams - or a trout-shaped or -emblazoned tie?
Candied citrus peel if you live in southern Florida - or Mickey
Mouse hats for the whole family? (Sounds like fun!)
Though you certainly don’t have to think in terms of where
you live... What about a place that your friend really
wants to travel to? Or simply enjoys reading a lot about
(whether in this age or in a former time period)? Or that she has
recently traveled to and is still high on? Or a place that both
of you had a wonderful time visiting together? - or are planning
on visiting together?
Or what about an aerial photo of the recipient’s house,
land, or town? - or even a chance for the dweller to fly
over home. It’s enchanting to see a special place from the
air!
Places are symbols, lodged in people’s minds... A
"place gift" has the power to stir the imagination and
bring people closer to what they love.
